With Apple leading the smartwatch market domination, its only logical its closest rival, Google (Android) puts it back into it and gives Apple a run for its money.

To this end, Google is working on not one, but two Android OS smartwatches. Codenamed “Swordfish” and “Angelfish” (like what kinda names are those for wristwatch projects?.. Lol), the two watches will run on the latest watch-based Android OS version – Android Wear 2.0. While the Swordfish is the bigger and much more technical variant with a pronounced bezel, the Angelfish is much smaller with a more flattened look.

Leaked info regarding these new watches were first made available by tech enthusiast – Evan Blass. He confirmed the production of these watches as well as the likely release period set for within the 1st quarter of 2017. The release will likely coincide  with Google making Android Wear 2.0 commercially available.

Google debuted the Android Wear 2.0 earlier this year, with its core built around the now more liberated Google Assistant. This already hints at the endless possibilities of voice commands and interactions between user and watch.

The new watch-based OS, with its material design, will have its own dedicated Play Store for more standalone apps.

These apps will facilitate more messaging, social, productivity and fitness related functions carried out by the watch, independently of the paired phone.

No prices are known yet for the coming watches. We expect more hints regarding that as well as specific features between now and Jan 2017.
